Art Activities (with a side of math) to beat Summer Brain Drain!

So, it's well known that the problem solving in art and drawing can be linked to higher test scores in left brain subjects like math. Geometry and Fractals also frequently show up as perspectives or in modern art like Jackson Pollock.

Here's a fun site that you'll enjoy for summer with your little one. Beat the brain drain with these puzzlers and encourage the creative process at the same time!

Pet Rocks - With Style!

Go beyond googly eyes with some painted rocks this summer. Why not go jumbo size and make some garden stepping stones?

Now that the little ones have some KidzArt confidence, they could reproduce some of their art on the stones. How about if you're not in our KidzArt art classes or want a little more brainstorming? Check out "Painting on Stones" to guide you along.

How do you feel about Color?

Did you know that colors affect mood and performance? These are some fun facts to share with your own KidzArt students as well as anyone looking to change an interior space, plan a logo or composition of any kind.

In a bold move Iowa football coach Hayden Fry notoriously painted the visitors locker room pink. A psychology major, Fry's move was hotly debated since the color has been shown to reduce aggressiveness and have a calming effect on people.

Looking for a little mood boosters in your home or workplace? Try these on for size:

Lavender: fosters feelings of warmth and comfort
Green: many people feel the most positive emotions in green rooms including peacefulness
Orange: since orange combines yellow and red, it's for vibrant, social spaces like dining rooms. It's been published that people eat more in red dining rooms (don't ruin your diet...)
Blue: workspaces painted blue had workers that were more productive and self-disciplined.

For more color symbolism and psychology check out Wikipedia's article and then check out how many of your favorite restaurants have red in their logo!

"Healthy Cookies" to make at home!

We at KidzArt love our art classes, and we love our tasty snacks too! Melissa gets asked about this recipie ALL THE TIME! So good, 2 cookies can be a really filling snack!

Since it's the time of year to give gifts to teachers...how about a little Vancouver, WA homemade treat from your kitchen!

2 sticks of butter (or Earth Balance oil spread) softened
1 1/2 c. brown sugar
4 egg whites
2 tsp. real vanilla extract
1 1/4 c. whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3 c. quick cooking oats
1 bag of semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. In large bowl: Cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the 4 egg whites 1 at a time. Add vanilla.
3. In a small bowl: combine flour and baking soda and stir into creamed mixture until just blended.
4. Mix in the quick oats & chocolate chips.
5. Drop by heaping spoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 14 minutes. Allow cookies to cool for 5 minutes on hot sheet before transferring to a cooling rack.

Enjoy!

Bug Off!

So, you're having some ant problems and their getting in the way of your drawing practice for KidzArt.... Here's 2 helpful remedies we've noticed work well around the house and keep to our sustainable liking (because who needs more toxic stuff around?).

Ants: Mix 1 part Borax, 1 part powdered sugar, and 1 part dry yeast. Place the piles near the entry points for the ants and watch them disappear. You'll be shocked how well this works!

Or, you can try applying 3-5 drops of citronella or peppermint essential oil to windowsills, doorways, kitchen sink, etc. Test first, essential oils are powerful stuff and can melt plastic!

New Schools!

KidzArt is proud to announce new school partnerships for the 2009-2010 school year!

"We have been humbled by the heartfelt word of mouth that is spurring our growth," says Executive Director Melissa Beatty.

KidzArt will be serving many new schools in the fall, and are projecting 25 classes a week at local elementary schools. "KidzArt will double in size after just one school year, and we are very proud of that. We've got great instructors and we are always looking to improve the experience for our kids. When a parent tells me that their child is more confident, and KidzArt is the highlight of their week, it makes us very proud to be serving the schools," says Beatty.

For more information on how to bring KidzArt to your school or on the ways they give back to the school communities they serve, please call KidzArt at 360-699-2222.
